Monaco, the jewel in the formula one crown and also a quite nice place for F2 drivers to drive around, or so they say. Until they get frustrated because they can’t overtake the car in front, or they get frustrated because they try to overtake the car in front but get crashed into a wall instead. Still, at least we know we can enjoy the lovely slow-mo shots of cars brushing the barriers, intersected by shots of massive yachts…
With only one round of F2 and F3 completed, Matteo Nannini gave up his ambitious (i.e. expensive) attempt at competing in both series and withdrew from F2 ahead of the Monaco weekend. The balance was therefore restored, with F3 once more becoming a stepping stone to F2 and Jack Aitken returning to fill Nannini’s vacated seat at HWA, because F2 had been missing some of its familiar old faces (yes I’m nostalgic for the days of Ghiotto and Markelov)…
As we all struggle to come to terms with the fact that this is the first time there has been no Monaco grand prix since the dawn of time, we can take consolation in the fact that we might at least get to see some overtaking in the virtual races. Except that the Codemasters TV director may be worse than the actual Monaco TV director…
Before packing up from Spain and moving onto Monaco, we had the F1 testing, featuring five of the F2 field. F1 testing veterans Jack Aitken and Nicholas Latifi were driving for Renault and Williams, with Latifi doing both days of testing, probably because Kubica and Russell couldn’t face another day of lugging the car around the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya after the Spanish Grand Prix…
