Top tips for the lazy WEC viewer
Does endurance racing seem overwhelming? Don’t worry, there’s an easy way to watch…
Step 1:
First you need someone to support. Scan the entry list for any drivers you LOVE (e.g. Kamui Kobayashi), check what car they are driving (e.g. #7 Toyota) and who the other drivers in that car are (e.g. Mike Conway and Nyck de Vries). This is now your car/team and you must cheer it on (e.g. YAY, GO #7 Toyota!!). Anyone who is in direct competition to that car is now your sworn enemy (e.g. Nooooooo horrible other car, don’t you dare try to overtake #7 Toyota!).
This approach also works if there’s a car manufacturer you particularly like, e.g. Toyota, or a number you love e.g. #7.
It also goes without saying that you can just choose a car that looks good (e.g. with a matte black livery, such as Toyota).
Failing all that then just go all in on the Aston Martin Valkyrie because honestly it’s so cool.
Step 2:
WEC is most interesting if you’re supporting a car from each category. Endurance racing isn’t all about watching the cars at the front. Spoiler alert: the LMGT3 category winner won’t be P1 in the overall race.
Step 3:
Don’t try to follow every detail all the time, it’s ok if you don’t always know what’s going on, no one does, not even the commentators. Just enjoy the experience of watching (or listening) and you’ll pick it up as you go along.
Happy WEC-ing!
